Since the beginning of recorded time, the breast has been a symbol of motherhood, femininity, and sexuality. Portrayed throughout history in works of art symbolizing each of these aspects of a woman’s life, and even in religious works of art, the breast has been memorialized as a central focus of a woman’s anatomy. Marilyn Yalom described the breast as both ‘‘life-giving’ ’and ‘‘life destroying’’. This gives us the essence of why breast surgeons must be trained with a keen sense of blending science and art. Oncoplastic surgery combines plastic surgery techniques with oncologic breast surgery. This type of surgery implies knowledge of advanced mammoplasty techniques. As a consequence, the vascularization and innervation of the NAC acquires fundamental importance in the choice of which therapeutic mammoplasty technique should be used.
